April 2025 Chiropractic Newsletter Preventing and Managing Herniated Discs

Herniated discs aren’t always felt immediately, but they can result in a great deal of dysfunction and pain. Our spines are made up of bones called vertebrae, most of which are separated from each other by discs that function as shock absorbers. A herniation is when a spinal disc’s inner gel pushes against or protrudes through a tear in the disc’s tougher exterior. This can cause inflammation in nearby tissues, make the disc less effective at its function, and put pressure on nearby nerve roots where they emerge from the spinal cord. If a nerve is pinched, a patient may experience symptoms such as pain, numbness, or weakness in the back, legs, or arms.

The good news is that chiropractors can treat herniated discs using several methods that enable the body’s natural healing. This month, we’ll discuss some of those treatments, but first, we want to examine why discs may be vulnerable to herniation.

Prevention is Key

Preventing herniated discs begins with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise strengthens the muscles that support your spine, allowing discs to share their burden. If your chiropractor tells you it’s safe to do so, focus on core-strengthening exercises. Additionally, practicing good posture while sitting, standing, and lifting can decrease the likelihood of developing a herniated disc. When lifting heavy objects, always bend at the knees and keep the load close to your body to avoid injuring your back.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also helpful, as excess weight can put additional stress on your spine. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in nutrients allows you to feel full while supplying your body with the resources it needs for tissue repair. Staying hydrated is equally important, as proper hydration helps keep the discs in your spine functioning optimally.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Being aware of the symptoms of a herniated disc is essential for early intervention. Common signs include localized back pain, radiating pain, numbness, or tingling in the extremities, and muscle weakness. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek professional evaluation and treatment promptly. Early intervention can help prevent further complications that might require more invasive treatment.

Chiropractic Care for Herniated Discs

Chiropractors are trained to assess musculoskeletal conditions and develop personalized treatment plans. Treatments may include spinal adjustments to restore proper alignment and reduce pressure on nerve roots and other tissues. These adjustments can also help improve the spine’s mobility.

Lifestyle Modifications for Recovery

In addition to chiropractic care, making certain lifestyle changes can help you recover from a herniated disc faster and with less risk of lingering problems. It is important to avoid activities that exacerbate your symptoms, such as heavy lifting or staying still for too long. Gentle exercises, such as walking or swimming, can help maintain mobility without putting undue stress on your spine.

Practicing good ergonomics at work and home can also make a big difference. Ensure that your workstation is set up to promote good posture, and take regular breaks to stretch and move throughout the day.
